We have to calculate the surface area of the cylinder.

It has a base diameter of 18 inches and a height of 16 inches.

The surface area will be equal to the sum of the area of the base, the area of the top (that is equal to the area of the base) and the lateral surface.

The area of the base can be calculated as:

\begin{gathered} A_b=(\pi D^2)/(4) \\ A_b=(3.14*18^2)/(4) \\ A_b=(3.14*324)/(4) \\ A_b=254.34 \end{gathered}

The lateral surface will be equal to the circumference of the base times the height. We then can calculate it as:

\begin{gathered} A_l=(\pi D)h \\ A_l=3.14*18*16 \\ A_l=904.32 \end{gathered}

Then, we can calculate the surface area of the cylinder as:

\begin{gathered} A=A_b+A_t+A_l \\ A=254.34+254.34+904.32 \\ A=1413 \end{gathered}

Answer: the surface area is 1413 in²
