x^3 - x^2 + x - 1
x + 1 x^4 - 1
-( x^4 + x^3
-x^3 - 1
-( -x^3 - x^2
x^2 - 1
-( x^2 + x
-x - 1
-( -x - 1

Therefore, (x^4 - 1)/(x + 1) = x^3 - x^2 + x - 1
