American colonies founded for economic reasons were called proprietary.

In British American colonial history, proprietary colony constituted a form of settlement dominating the period 1660–90, in which favourites of the British crown received huge tracts of land in the New World(Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and the Carolinas) to supervise and develop. King Charles II established the first Proprietary Colonies seeking to repay debts and favors.
