The table salt indicates that it is made with sodium and chloride and water is made with 2 hydrogen and one oxygen atom.

The formula for these compounds indicates the elements that these compounds are made of. For table salt, it is made up of sodium and chlorine atoms. For a water molecule, it is made of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. Hope this answers the question.
