What legal precedent did Hammurabi code establish

This set of laws from ancient Babylon are the earliest substantial rules of law written and published in an available format for all affected to be informed about. So the precedent is really that of officially codifying the rules of law. This does not mean that today we could consider all the rules to be just in our own legal systems. eg you could be sentenced to death for hiding a runaway slave.
