1. because everything you can see has particles that can vibrate but if there are no particles, nothing to bump into to create that vibrate in this case sounds can't travel.

2. light waves can travel through a vacuum does not require a medium. In empty "space," the wave does not grow smaller no matter how far it "travels" because the wave is not interacting with anything else... As a "wave travels" from a source, it spreads outward in all directions.
