Answer: Animals use nutrients and energy to keep vital functions functioning properly and stay alive.

Step-by-step explanation:

Animals use the nutrients obtained from food in order to obtain the energy needed to carry out physiological functions properly.

Most animal cells undergo a series of chemical reactions in which organic molecules from food and oxygen are consumed to release energy. This process is known as aerobic cell respiration and occurs in an organelle called mitochondria.
