Concerning the planetary orbits, why was Copernicus somewhat inaccurate?

This is astronomy not biology,

But anywho, From what I can remember, Copernicus's heliocentric theory stated that the planets orbited in perfectly circular orbits. In reality, they are shaped like ellipses (ovals).
