da Vinci existed in a time of incredible change in culture and philosophy of Europe. For the first time on a large scale, people were learning to read, questioning what they were told to believe in, and starting to embrace the concept of science (experimentation, hypotheses, etc.). da Vinci was a "Renaissance man" because he was a jack-of-all-trades who valued knowledge for its own sake and dabbled in many different fields.
