How did Ernest Rutherford’s discovery affect the model of the atom?

Rutherford has discovered the nucleus (and it was quite small), which is full of protons and neutrons, and the outside of the nucleus were electrons (he did this by bombarding gold foil with alpha particles. This is a big step closer to the modern atomic model as well.
