In the Zenger trial why were newspapers careful not to offend Royal officials?

At the time, if you printed "lies", you would be severely punished. So, if u insulted the crown or those close to the royal family, you were sure to be called a liar for what you wrote and be punished. The royals had the best attorneys, mind you, so, if you went up against one of them, you are most likely to loose.
