Propose a mathematical equation to calculate the charge on an ion from the number of protons and electrons in an ion .

What does that mean someone help me. hw emergen-c

the mathematical equation I came up with was p-e=charge. P representing the positive proton charge, e representing the negative electron. I figured since isotopes all have different charges based on the number of electrons (because the number of protons never change) all you have to do is subtract the negatives from your original charge (number of protons) to get the charge of the ion.

but I don't know for sure.
