One of the most effective ways to teach a child self-control is by talking to him or her. Sometimes parents assume that children are too young to understand reasons, so they avoid talking to them. However, children can surprise us, and they often learn much faster than we assume. If a child understands the reasons why he should behave better, he might be more hesitant to misbehave in the future, which would lead to less punishments.

To help a parent discipline in an effective manner and avoid punishing actions, a parent could make sure to sit down and talk to the child, explaining clearly what they have done wrong, and why not to do it again. This would then be repeated, and the child could be asked to write an apology or explaination letter.
