3/500 = x/12,000...3 defective to 500 made = x defective to 12,000 made
cross multiply
(500)(x) = (3)(12,000)
500x = 36,000
x = 36,000/500
x = 72...there will be 72 defective if 12,000 are produced

Answer:72 bulbs

Explanation:

Given

Ratio of defective light bulbs produced to total light bulbs produced is about

3:500

that is if 503 bulbs are manufactured then 3 are defective

let x be the non-defective bulbs in 12000 bulbs

defective bulbs=
x* (3)/(500)

therefore

12000=Non-defective +defective

12000=x+x* (3)/(500)

12000=(503)/(500)* x

x=11,928.42\approx 11,928

Therefore Defective bulbs =12000-11928=72 bulbs
