The correct answer is:

The thieves imitate/mock the family's cry.

When Maria yells for help, Jonathan and the children quickly join her to try calling the neighbors and the police. When they stop after some time, they can only hear silence. That´s when the thief leader mockingly offers to help them, leading his criminal group to yell even louder cries for help, knowing nobody could hear them.

The question is asking to state on how do the thieves respond when jonathans family begins to yell and base on the story of the Civil Peace, the thieves are very bold and cocky, and when Jonathon and his family begin to yell for help, the thieves respond by helping them with that. I hoe you are satisfied with my answer and feel free to ask for more
