Heterotrophs are organisms that must acquire food and thus the energy contained in the food from external or alternate sources as they themselves cannot produce quantities of food themselves. Heterotrophs are categorized as consumers, and are directly found above Producers in Food webs.

These organisms are called autotrophs. Autotrophs are also called 'self-feeders' and they are able to produce energy from sunlight and carbon dioxide and are therefore known as 'producers.'
