Let the two numbers be x, then
x + y = 17 . . . . (1)
x - y = 3 . . . . . (2)

(1) - (2) => 2y = 14 => y = 14/2 = 7
From (1), x + 7 = 17 => x = 17 - 7 = 10

Therefore, x = 10 and y = 7.
