As a community savings bank, it takes a computer 18 minutes to process and print payroll checks. When a second computer is used in a true computers work together, the checks can we process and punch it in 14 minutes. How long would it take the second computer by itself to process and print the payroll checks?

Let n the number of minutes the second computer takes,

1/18 - rate first computer

1/n - rate second computer

1/14 rate of the computers together

so we will have the next equation

(1)/(18)+(1)/(n)=(1)/(14)

Then we need to isolate the n

\begin{gathered} (1)/(n)=(1)/(14)-(1)/(18) \\ \\ (1)/(n)=(1)/(63) \end{gathered}

n=63

ANSWER

the second computer by itself to process and print the payroll checks will take it 63 minutes
