Puritan sermons were crucial for people's behavior during the colonial times. Since the society was Puritan, the sermons usually spoke of cruel punishment and god's wrath that would come upon them if they weren't good Christians. That is why they were extremely religious even outside of Church and there were many laws and punishments inspired by the Bible such as punishment for adultery or similar.
