“Great God, direct, and guard him from on high, And from his head let ev'ry evil fly!” How does the couplet form support the meaning of the lines?

Because lines are things held high or in the air, and when there couplet form says "Guard him high" they are comparing it to lines, which is usually in the same category as lines.
