Think about using decimal models to show 6.84. If you only used tents, what place would you not be able to model? How many tenths would you use to model the other two places?

Answer:

If we only use tenths, then we wont be able to model the hundredths place value that is the value of 4 in the given decimal.

Explanation:

We are given the number 6.84

The place value chart for this number can be written as:

Place value: Ones . Tenths Hundredths

6.84: 6 . 8 4

The decimal expansion can be written as:

6.84 = 6* 1 + 8* \displaystyle(1)/(10) + 4* \displaystyle(1)/(100)

If we only use tenths, then we wont be able to model the hundredths place value that is the value of 4 in the given decimal.

To model 4 that is 0.04, we need

\displaystyle(1)/(10)* \displaystyle(1)/(10)* 4 = 0.04

To model 6, we need

10* \displaystyle(1)/(10)* 6 = 6
