Why is alcoholism considered a chronic disease?

Alcoholism is considered a chronic disease since it is very difficult to treat and tends to recur throughout the lifetime of the person afflicted. Although it can be treated, an alcoholic is never truly cured of their addiction. They must take steps and always be aware of how their disease can flare up at any time.
