You first would set it up as a fraction, the cost goes on TOP and the pounds go on the bottom so it would look like this: 3.85/ 3 so you have to make the bottom number equal 1 cause we want to find the cost for 1 pound of butter so we divide 3 by 3 to equal 1 then we divide by 3 on top to find the cost per pound so the equation would look like this:

3.85 3 1.28 so it costs 1.28$ per pound
------- divided by ------ = ---------
3 lbs 3 1

Answer: The required equation is,

3n=3.85

Explanation:

Here, n represents price of butter ( in dollars ) per pounds,

⇒ Cost of 1 pounds of butter = n

⇒ Cost of 3 pounds of butter = 3n,

According to the question,

Cost of 3 pounds of butter = $ 3.85,

\implies 3n = 3.85

Which is the required equation that shows the given situation.
