4y - 3 = y + 6 |add 3 to both sides
4y = y + 9 |subtract y from both sides
3y = 9 |divide both sides by 3
y = 3
check:
L = 4 · 3 - 3 = 12 - 3 = 9
R = 3 + 6 = 9
L = R
Answer: C. 3

If your are looking for y then y = 3
4y-3=y+6
Get your y's to one side then subtract from the right.
3y-3=6
Then move the minus three to the right.
3y=9
Then simply divide by three.
