Complete Question

Aisha is spending a week at her family’s cottage and wants to read her favourite book, which is 400 pages long.

a) If she reads one page every 36 seconds, how many hours will it take her to read her book?

b) Suppose Aisha only reads from 10:15 a.m. to 2:10 p.m., and from 7:20 p.m. to 9:00p.m. each day, starting on Monday. On what day and at what time will she finish reading her book?

Answer:

a) 4 hours

b) Monday, 7:25 pm

Explanation:

a) From the above question, we are told that,

She read 1 page in 36 seconds

Total number of pages in the books = 400

Hence:

1 page = 36 seconds

400 pages = x

Cross Multiply

x = 400 × 36 seconds

x = 14,400 seconds

Converting this to hours

60 seconds = 1 minute

60 minutes = 1 hour

Hence: 60 × 60 = 3600 seconds = 2 hour.

3600 seconds = 1 hour

14400 seconds = x

x = 14400/3600

x = 4 hours

Hence, it takes Aisha 4 hours to finish reading the 400 paged book

b) The number of hours between 10:15 a.m. and 2:10 p.m. is

calculated as:

2:10 pm - 10.15 am

Converting 2:10 pm to a 24 hour clock for easy calculation =

2:10 pm = 14:10 hours

Hence:

14:10 - 10:15

= 3 hours 55 minutes

Remember, from Question a, it takes Aisha 4 hours to finish reading her book and

If 10:15 a.m. to 2:10 p.m = 3 hours 55 minutes, Aisha needs 5 extra minutes to finish her book.

Therefore, she will finish reading her book at 7:25 p.m. on Monday.
