Escherichia coli can grow in glucose broth both aerobically and anaerobically. When grown aerobically, these bacteria divide every 20 minutes. However, when grown anaerobically they require about 100 minutes to divide. What may account for this difference in growth rate?

Anaerobic respiration provides less energy than the aerobic respiration.
