Reading the passage there are two senses that are evidently used. These senses are A. SIGHT and though not included in the choices SENSE OF SMELL.

Sense of sight - seeing her produce the key from her pocket ; seeing a trunk being opened.

Sense of smell - smelling a scent once the trunk that has been opened.
