Solving an equation means finding a value of a variable that make the equation true. This value is called the solution of the equation. A mathematical equation is just like a balanced equation. Both sides of the equation should be equal at all times. Whatever we do to one side, has to be done on the opposite side.

5x-2+3x-4=2x-8+x+2

8x-2-4=2x-8+x+2

8x-6=2x-8+x+2

8x-6=3x-8+2

8x-6=3x-6

8x=3x
Cancel \ -6 \ on \ both \ sides

8x-3x=0
Move \ all \ terms \ to \ one \ side

5x=0

5x/5=0/5
Divide \ both \ sides \ by \ 5

x=0

5x-2+3x-4 = 2x-8+x+2

First we have to put all X's on side and the remaining numbers on the other, changing their signal if they move across the equal sign. Therefore,

5x+3x-2x-x = -8+2+4+2
5x = 0
x= 0/5
x= 0
