4(x+1)-ax=x+5

4x+4-ax=x+5
Expand

4x-ax=x+5-4
Subtract \ 4 \ from \ both \ sides

4x-ax=x+1

4x=x+1+ax
Add \ ax \ to \ both \ sides

4x-x=1+ax
Subtract \ x \ from \ both \ sides

3x=1+ax

3x-ax=1
Subtract \ ax \ from \ both \ sides

x(3-a)=1

x= (1)/(3-a)

4(x + 1) - ax = x + 5
4(x) + 4(1) - ax = x + 5
4x + 4 - ax = x + 5
- x - x
3x + 4 - ax = 5
- 4 - 4
3x - ax = 1
x(3) - x(a) = 1
x(3 - a) = 1
3 - a 3 - a
x = 1/(3 - a)
