The digit directly to the right of the place which you are rounding determines whether you round up or down. Once this is determined and you round your number, all the digits to the right of the place you rounded to turn into a zero. Ex : Round 123,647 to the nearest thousand. 12'3',647 3 is in the thousands place. 6 is the digit to the right of the 3. Since 6 is higher than five, you round up. So, rounding 123,647 to the nearest thousand would be 124,000.
