From 8x - y = - 9 you get y = 8x + 9

Substitution in 4x - 3y = -22

4x - 3(8x + 9) = -22 ---- This is the new equation requested

Expanding

4x - 24x - 27 = -22

- 20x = - 22 + 27

- 20x = 5

x = - 5/20

x = - 1/4
