How are species related to the concept of biodiversity ?

Biodiversity is the number of species in a particular ecosystem.
It's generally considered more healthy for an environment to have large numbers of species. Many organisms come to depend on others so when you lose one species, it could cause others to be lost.
Example: Several trees in New Zealand required a giant extinct bird the moas to spread their seeds. They lost the trees because they lost the moas.
