The country in the Americas who first adopted slavery and was one of the last to abolish it is Brazil. Actually, Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery in Western world, in 1888. By that time, 40% of the total number of slaves brought to the Americas had been imported from Africa to Brazil. A forced migration of Africans to Brazil for slavery took place during a period of history known as Atlantic slave trade to Brazil. Slavery there began long before the establishment of first Portuguese settlement in 1532.
