x - the width of a rectangle
12 in - the length of a rectangle
56 in - the perimeter of a rectangle
2x + 2 · 12 = 56
2x + 24 = 56 |subtract 24 from both sides
2x = 32 |divide both sides by 2
x = 32 (in)
Answer: The width of a rectangle is 32 in.
