The larger of two numbers is ten more than twice the smaller number. T he sum of the numbers is forty. What is the original number??? Sole and Check.

first lets represent
x will be the smaller number
while the larger one is 2x+10
so their sum is 40
so x+2x+10=40
3x+10=40
3x=30
x=10

so the smaller one is 10 while the larger is
2x+10
2(10)+10
20+10
=30

okay, so what this means is that the larger number is
10 + 2x
and the smaller number is x
put them together and set them equal to forty.
10+3x=40
subtract ten from both sides.
3x=30
devide both sides by three
x=10
now you have the smaller number, so plug it back in to the equation we said was the bigger number.
10+2(10)
The larger number is 30.
