the Three-Fifths Compromise
The Three-Fifths Compromise mean that Three-Fifths of a state's slave population would count towards their total population when deciding how many representatives a state would have in the House of Representatives. The South wanted slaves to be counted as "whole" people so that they could have higher population numbers which would result in more representatives in the House. The North, however, did not want them to have more representation and argued that if they are going to treat the slaves as though they were livestock, then they should count for the same towards population - which is none.
