The Kingdom of Aksum was an ancient kingdom located in what is now the Tigray Region (northern Ethiopia) and Eritrea. The kingdom rose to prominence as it established as a major player in the key commercial route that connected the Roman Empire and Ancient India. Aksumite leaders facilitated trading with the introduction of their own currency. The kingdom was able to expand its rule by entering politics on neighboring kingdoms, eventually conquering the Himyarite Kingdom.
