Although both the mitosis and meiosis begin with a diploid cell that contains replicated chromosomes, they also have distict characteristics. Explain the main differences between these two processes and what types of daughter cells are produced by each.

Answer:

Both mitosis and meiosis are the types of cell division but they show contrasting features as :

1. Mitosis division is divided into one phase whereas meiosis has two phases-meiosis I and II.

2. Each phase of mitosis is divided into -prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and cytokinesis while meiosis into ten stages- Prophase I,II, metaphase I,II, anaphse I,II, telophase I, II and cytokinesis I,II.

3. Mitosis produces two daughter cells while meiosis produces four daughter cells.

4. Mitosis produces cells with same genetic material while meiosis produces cells with variations in genetic material.

5. Mitotic maintains its ploidy whereas meiosis produces cells with half the number of chromosomes.

6. Mitosis is involved in the process responsible for growth and repair while meiosis produces gametes.

7. Mitosis is asexual type of reproduction while meiosis is involved in sexual mode of reproduction.

Hello!

Meiosis occurs in humans, animals, plants and fungi, and its a sexual type of reproduction. The daughter cells are different, cause the chromosomes are mixed. Mitosis is a asexual type of reproduction and the daughter cells are identical.
