A man is on a diet and goes into a shop to buy some turkey slices. He is given 3 slices which together weigh 1/3 of a pound, but his diet allows 1/4 of a pound. How much of the 3 slices can he eat while staying true to his diet?

Answer:

He can eat 2 slices plus 1/4th of a slice.

Explanation:

Consider the provided information.

Let each of the slices have equal in weight.

It is given that 3 slices which together weigh 1/3 of a pound,

Which can be written as:

3 slices = 1/3 pound

Multiply both the side by 3.

3×3 slices = 1/3 × 3pound

9 slices = 1 pound

So, 1 pound contains 9 slice. But his diet allows 1/4 of a pound.

Multiply both the side by 1/4.

9 × 1/4 slices = 1 × 1/4 pound

9/4 slices = 1/4 pound

2.25 slices = 1/4 pound or 2 + 1/4 slices = 1/4 pound

Hence, He can eat 2 slices plus 1/4th of a slice.

In order to compare 1/4 of a pound with 1/3 of a pound, we take them to the same dominator.
1/4=3/12
1/3=4/12

if 3 slices weigh ................... 4/12 of a pound
x slices weigh ................... 3/12 of a pound

x=
(3* (3)/(12) )/( (4)/(12) ) = ( (9)/(12) )/( (4)/(12) ) = (9)/(4) = 2.25

He can actually eat 2 slices and a quarter.
