y = 3 x - 7

Solve 3x - 7 = y for x :

3 x - 7 = y

Add 7 to both sides:

3x-7+7=y+7

Refine : 3x = y +7

Divide both sides by 3 :

3 x / 3 = y+7 / 3

Refine : y = y+7 / 3

Subsititute y = x

therefore inverse of y = 3x - 7 is:

x+7 / 3

hope this helps!

f(x) = 3x - 7. you replace Y with f(x) because f(x) is the inverse of y
