why should writers include references to their research in an argument? it shows they do not have original thoughts on the issue. it adds credibility to the argument they wish to prove. it distracts readers from the counterclaims of others. it focuses the audience on the insignificant details.

The second sentence would be correct. Writers include references in their writing to provide solid evidence and add credibility to their argument or claim. Without evidence, how will the person prove their argument to be believable and correct? The other answers are easily eliminated, it is not to prove their absence of originality or lack of thought on the subject, rather it reinforces their word.
