divide both sides by 6
b<4

4b+12>4
minus 12 both sides
4b>-8
divide by 4
b>-2

b<4 or b>-2
b>-2 or b<4
if we graph each on a number line, they go in oposite directions

since it is OR, the solution must satisfy one OR the other, doesn't have to be both
