At a railway yard, locomotives are used to pull containers full of oil. A locomotive is chosen according to the volume of oil it can pull as shown in the table. Consider a cylindrical container that needs pulling. It is 40 feet long and 12 feet in diameter. If one-half of the container is filled with oil, which locomotive should be selected to pull it? Volume of Oil in Container

A450
0−750 cubic feet
CG35
750−1,500 cubic feet
BR73
1,500−2,500 cubic feet
YH61
2,500−3,500 cubic feet

Answer:

Option C. BR73 locomotive.

Explanation:

A cylindrical container having radius =
(12)/(2) feet

and length = 40 feet.

Volume of the container =
\pi r^(2)h

=
\pi (6)^(2) (40)

= x × ( 36 × 40 )

= 4525.71 cubic feet

Since container is half filled so volume of the oil =
(4525.71)/(2)

= 2262.86 feet³

From the given table BR73 locomotive will be used to pull the container.
