Dr. Jekill had been tortured by his dark thoughts ever since he was a little kid, then after studying and becoming an excellent scientist he creates a syrup that can separate his evil self from himself, creating two personalities within him, he thought he could eventually get rid of the evil part this way, unfortunately as the story advances things don't happen as he was expecting.
