3x + 12 = 18 . . . . . (1)
-(3x + 12) = 18 . . . (2)
From (1): 3x = 18 - 12 = 6
x = 6/3 = 2
From (2): -3x = 18 + 12 = 30
x = 30/-3 = -10
Therefore, there are two solutions.
