Let the larger number is x and smaller number is y


x-y = 48

One number x is three less than four times y


x= 4y-3

now we solve both equations for x and y

Lets solve the first equation for y


x-y = 48

add y on both sides


x= 48+y

Now subtract 48 from both sides


x-48 = y

Replace y in the second equation and solve for x


x= 4y-3


x= 4(x-48)-3


x=4x - 192 - 3

Subtract 4x on both sides


-3x=-189

Divide by -3


x=63

So the large number is 63
