Officially it was because of disputed territory in southern Texas and violence by Mexican troops on "American soil".

Many people suspected however that this violence was provoked by Polk so that he could fight and win an easy war in order to gain lots of Western territory.
It was seen by its critics as aggressive and so it was controversial.
