Solution:

Let the two numbers be represented by x and y


\begin{gathered} The\text{ sum of the two numbers is -11} \\ x+y=-11..........................(1) \\ \\ \\ \\ One\text{ number is 161 less than the other} \\ x=y-161...........................(2) \end{gathered}

Substituting equation (2) into equation (1);


\begin{gathered} y-161+y=-11 \\ 2y=-11+161 \\ 2y=150 \\ y=(150)/(2) \\ y=75 \end{gathered}

Substitute y = 75 into equation (2) to get x


\begin{gathered} x=75-161 \\ x=-86 \end{gathered}

Therefore, the two numbers are -86 and 75
