the chromosomes when a cell is about to divide are formed by DNA wrapping its self around histone proteins and so the chromosomes condense and become thicker and visible this is important as it makes sure that the DNA is all organised and eases the cells division

hope that helps

The eukaryotic cell's chromosomes undergoes DNA wrapping as it prepares to divide. It wraps around proteins and the chromosomes condense to thicker and more visible one. This is essential to the process in order to make sure that the DNA is still intact and also it eases the cell's division.
