Two cars raced at a race track. The faster car traveled 20 mph faster than the slower car. In the time that the slower car traveled 165 miles, the faster car traveled 225 miles. If the speeds of the cars remained constant, how fast did the slower car travel during the race?

So we have a 20mph difference in speed, and 60mile difference total, so they must have travelled for 3 hours. 165 miles in 3 hours gives a speed of 55mph for the slower car

Let x be the speed of the slower car and that x + 20 be the speed of the faster car. The time it takes for the object to travel a certain distance is the quotient when distance is divided by the speed.
t = d / S
Substituting the given and equating their times,
t = 225 / (x + 20) = 165 / x
The value of x is equal to 55. Therefore, the value of t is equal to 3 hours.
